Pannier ideas and photos

May 13, 2009

A popular choice for many postie bike owners is to build panniers. To hold them onto the bike you need some sort of frame.

996d_1Australia Post use this style of frame, nothing more then a bit of bent metal, with rubber underneath to stop the frame scratching the chrome parcel tray. 4 bolts hold it down.

gedc0070Another way of creating the same thing. This one looks very simple to create.

Pickles Auctions and Getting the Bikes

May 4, 2009

Well, i am at uni, bored and not particularly inclined towards the work i should be doing so, next best thing, updating the blog. Quite a bit has happened since our last blog entry, we have now moved out of the realm of fantasy, Crolly put it nicely when he said “this is no longer just a crazy idea is it”, now it has moved on to be a crazy idea that we are actually going to do.

Last Thursday Ben, Todd, Crolly and I headed down to the pickles auction and picked up three posties, Todd being the crew member who chose not to buy on this occasion. The gang (perhaps i shouldn’t be using this word in connection to a group of budding motorcyclists) met up at my place on Thursday morning and were out the door on our way by 8am Ben, Crolly and Todd in the Mirage and, Rob and I towing the trailer in the VW. Both cars arrived at the auction with a minimal number of navigation errors, just the one missed turn by Ben, a vast improvement on last time and we headed in to sort out our registration and check out the bikes.

Working through the rough check list Ben and I had put together we got to assessing all the bikes and making a decision as to which we would bid on. On the whole the bikes seemed to be in a far better condition than they had on the recy trip and we found around 15 bikes in the first 30 that we felt were worth bidding on. Rob was a great help at this stage and his general knowledge along with the research we had done put us in good stead to work out which bikes we liked. With the bikes all assessed and a solid list made it was now time to wait… and wait some more. Lunch and wander around the yard followed and as with the previous trip we were constantly amazed how much some of the truck wrecks sold for. At around 2pm the auctioneer finally made it to the bikes and we found ourselves an obvious position to stand and bid from.
